Soviet Military Relic

October 18th, 2007
Estonia is a small country by the Baltic Sea - a very important sea for mercahnts and conquerors throughout the history. As we are also neighbours to big Russia, our land has always been a desirable prey for all. For the last 15 years we have been a free country, but the signs of war and 50 years of Soviet order are still extant. During the Soviet time it was at Estonia’s border where the Iron Curtain closed and free world begun, so many top secret and important military bases were built here. Some of them under ground, some even under water. Come and see, what’s left of it!

The town that didn’t exist

Paldiski is a small town situated in the north-west coast of Estonia. After the World War II a russian military base was set up but up to 1962 there was also some estonian civilians living there. In 1962 the government decided that there will be a big russian nuclear submarine building and training center in Paldiski. All the civil people were deported from the town, it was surrounded with a big fence and it disappeared from the map for the next 30 years. Now the town is an important tradeport and also a center of Estonian Peace Corps but the Soviet scent is still very strong. See stunning photos of Paldiski

Islands where war lasted for 50 years

Before the War II there was 341 people living in Pakri Islands. When russians came, all of them were deported and the islands became a Soviet Military Base. The islands were filled with explosives and were used as a gunnery-practice ground by all European communist countries up to 1992. Now the island is full of abandoned military objects which vary with stunning nature sights. See homepage and photos of Pakri Islands

The last frontier of Soviet Army

Hiiumaa - one of the largest islands in Estonia was found as a very good strategical place by the Soviet Army and for 49 years many big areas   of the island were closed and secret bases were built. Nowadays many objects are well preserved although some bunkers underground are filled with water. See photos of Hiiumaa bases
