Otepää - small town for recreation

Otepää is Estonia`s best resort. South Estonia is a modern tourism region with wonderful nature and an interesting past. South Estonia is unique an mysterious: lakes, hills and the nostalgic atmosphere of small towns.Otepää is small town in South Estonia and it got its name (bear`s head) after the unconventional shaped hillis. Otepää is the highest of all Estonian towns being 150 m above sea level. The Otepää Landscape Reserve is the largest of its kind in Estonia and abounds in lakes (1 lake for every 9 sq km). There are lakes for swimming, fishing and also birds to nest.

Otepää is the skiinig and winter capital of Estonia, as the area around it gets more snow than any other part of the country. Otepää is know first and foremast for its ski centers, first of all Tehvandi and Kuutsemäe.

Otepää is a paradise for to everyone enjoying snow: there are lit slalom slopes with elevators and in quantities cross-country tracks. Sometimes one can see training Olympics winners Andrus Veerpalu and Kristina Smigun. In summer there are held various competitions of rollerskiing and rollerblades.

The best know lake near Otepää is Pühajärv (Holy Lake). Dalai Lama, the Tibetan religious leader, blessed the lake when visited Estonia in 1992. Pühajärv and other lakes nearby offer many wather-activities like rowing and paddle boat rides to fishing and sunbathing. Around Pühajärve SPA Hotel are also tennis courts and hiking trails.

Otepää there`s one-of-a-kind place in Estonia where one can play golf in winter also.In Otepää and around it, there are many various resting and relaxing places.
