Vilsandi National Park is a kind of rarity as one of the oldest protected areas in the Baltic Sea region. Besides Vilsandi, only a few nature reserves on the shore of the Baltic Sea in Sweden and Finland can boast of an equally long history.

- The objective of the national park is to protect the coastal nature and cultural heritage of the West-Estonian archipelago.
- Vilsandi is situated in Kihelkonna commune, in Saare county and it is the most westward populated island in
Estonia. Its area is 9 km2. Its population is 20.

National Park is 238 km2, including 163 km2 of sea and 75 km2 of land. The national park embraces 160 islands and islets of different sizes.
- 250 species of birds. Tens of thousands seabirds stop, breed, migrate and nest on the surrounding islets of Vilsandi. Vilsandi is numbered among the highest category areas of important international birds’ sanctuarities.
- Vegetation is explored for more than hundred years because of aboudance of its typical and rare and unique plants and their associations.
- The national park belongs to the Natura 2000 network both as a bird sanctuary and nature reserve.
